ebAl is a collaborative network of libraries, archives and documentation centers focusing on/ specializing in the history, the theories, and the cultures of anarchist and libertarian movements. (NB ‘libertarian’ understood here as ‘left libertarian’ , not the right-wing, ‘Californian’ variety) RebAl is born out the desire to facilitate access to the libertarian cultural heritage, in the belief that a broader circulation of such ideas is an important tool for the social transformation process, and for spreading anti-authoritarian principles and practices. The RebAl project is an initiative by a collective of Italian archives and libraries, but seeks to become an international reference to foster the collaboration between those centers which share the same objectives. RebAl’s core instrument is the collective virtual (publications) directory, offering one-click access to, as well as search and retrieval of, the full stack of documents held by the various participants to the scheme. The collective directory is set up using VuFind open source software (http://vufind-org.github.io/vufind/) which is hosted on the site www.rebal.info independently from the sites of the libraries and archives participating. It will enable the inclusion of library directories, but also of additional resources such as digital libraries, archives inventories, bibliographies, and open access publications - all this so as to make RebAl a full-fledged cultural portal. General and technical site maintenance of the collective catalog are under the responsibility of a voluntary, unwaged working group, which will also be tasked with integrating new members’ directories and share the necessary technical maintenance how-to with them. I have made a patch to gscan2pdf project in order to support conversion of plain photos to pdf with preservation of original document size information. The presentation is for this procedure but also about the extra equipment that we can use for better results. This procedure is mainly for large documents like posters, newspaper etc (for documents that we do not have the scanner option), in eutopic archive we use this procedure also to convert TIF images from scanner.
Le travail en réseau des centres d’archives et de documentation libertaires doit aller au-delà de rencontres et d’échanges d’expérience. Il faut aussi se construire des outils communs. Outils de recherche (retrouver), certes, mais aussi outils de catalogue (produire). Je propose de multiplier les catalogues collectifs (livres, films, affiches, biographies, etc.) ou toutes les bonnes volontés peuvent participer. Un bon catalogue collectif est surtout un outil collaboratif ou chacun·e peut participer à ses moyens pour aboutir à satisfaire aux besoins de tout le monde. Je vais prendre l’exemple de Placard, site international et multilingue sur les affiches militantes anarchistes du monde entier. Je compte aussi parler du besoin de collaborer entre sites collectifs : créer des “méta-sites » ou des réseaux de sites qui peuvent dialoguer, si possible, automatiquement.
Depuis des années, nous constatons beaucoup d’enthousiasme pour numériser des périodiques et autres documents, mais il est difficile d’avoir une approche cohérente, si bien que souvent une large part du travail est finalement perdu ou inutilisable, ou encore fait à double. Un document digital a une durée de vie inférieure papier s’il n’est pas mis régulièrement à jour. Et il sera difficile à retrouver s’il n’y a pas de convention de nommage, et difficile à exploiter si ce sont des photos et non du texte cherchable. Des collaborations sont souvent possible avec de grandes institutions.
Libreant is a book manager for both digital and paper documents. It can store any kind of digital data actually, not only books. It’s db structure makes Libreant highly customizable, documents can be archived by their types with different metadata set, moreover you can create your own preset and choose default descriptors for that kind of volume.The search function looks throught over the db, and rank matches powered by ElasticSearch. The language of metadata (as title, or description) is a compulsory field, since the db will use it to optimize the search. Elements into Libreant are defined as volumes, for each volume you can attach many files, usually this files are pdf or book scansions.Libreant is built and intended as a federation of nodes, every node is an archive.From a node you can search into friend-nodes, with OpenSearch protocol. Possible extensions into Web are suspended. Libreant aims to share, find and save books. It can be used by librarian who needs an archive system or to collect digital items in a file sharing project. Everyone knows Wikipedia, but have you ever heard of Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource? These are two sister projects of the famous online encyclopedia which could be particularly interesting for archivists. Wikimedia Commons is a database of media files released under copyleft licenses or in the public domain, which can be used to enrich Wikipedia articles as well as other projects. Wikisource is an online library cointaining free-licensed publications, which can be books, newspapers, speeches etc. These platforms can be useful to spread and share materials with a more genral public, and to provide resources to improve Wikipedia coverage of anarchist and libertarian movements. In this presentation I’m going to explain how they work, how to contribute to them and why they matter.
